Ambato Mountains
A Mosaic for Protecting Water and Life. In the Ambato Mountains, complex systems of scrubland and cloud forest safeguard the water that sustains life in the semi-arid regions of northwestern Argentina. Here, conservation means building agreements among communities.
The Landscape
Southern Ambato is home to mountain ecosystems of enormous biodiversity, native forests, and threatened species such as the taruca (Andean deer).
The municipal reserves form a key corridor for protecting water sources and biodiversity.
The Threat
Environmental pressures and the need to strengthen management tools represent one of the greatest challenges to ensuring long-term conservation.
Our work
We promote a pioneering model of territorial governance based on the country's first mosaic of municipal protected areas.
We support participatory processes, assist municipalities with their management plans, and strengthen the infrastructure and territorial identity of the reserves.
The community
The project integrates local governments, technical experts, and the local community, who actively participate in joint conservation planning.
- Argentina's First Mosaic of Municipal Protected Areas.
- 140,102 hectares of reserves with approved management plans.
- Signage installed at strategic access points.
- More than 60,000 hectares projected for conservation by 2028 with new reserves.
